In the February Elle Décor article Tudor Triumph featuring Steven
Gambrel's exceptional work, I spotted an uncredited two-door cabinet
on page 155. The piece is by the important German architect and designer Bruno Paul.
Paul balances warm, walnut veneer surfaces with bold, sleek,
unexpected curves in this functional object. Pre-Bauhaus, it
represents the highpoint of his work - most likely designed between
1912 and 1924 while Paul was working in Berlin. Such designs are
often described as the “other modernism.”
It's hard not to be captivated by Gambrel's design decisions on this
project. By placing items like this optimistic Bruno Paul cabinet into the home, he
revitalizes this historic Bronxville property with attention to detail
and tradition but places that aesthetic into a vibrant new context.
